July 2 – Meet the crowds in DC

DC is very full of tourists. Tickets for restricted (popular) places are all allocated by 11am. To save ourselves time and frustration have decided that we will explore other places like the zoo, cathedral, Arlington cemetery, museums and open-air monuments. Ticketed places will have to be done another time.

Union Station is a great hub of activity. We strolled through there at lunchtime and enjoyed a meal way down in the lower level. Godiva chocolates for dessert were an extravagant treat. The Botanic gardens orchids were beautiful. A special exhibition of medicinal plants from Kwa Zulu Natal was quite unimpressive, but the hand made wire and bead aloes were impressive(pic). The African Art Museum had some interesting pieces. The city is getting ready for 4th July Celebrations on Friday so there are marquis and porta pottys all over the mall. It makes it impossible to get a good photo of the monuments and Capitol building.

The weather is incredibly cool and I hope it lasts through the weekend. Mike’s highlight of the day seems to be traveling the metro bus and rail systems.
